King's mistress

The Shropshire branch of the Boterells was an offshoot of the Cornish branch. King Henry I, a serial philanderer, needed to divest himself of one of his mistresses. He did a deal with William Boterel of Boscastle, Cornwall, son of Nicholas, to marry the girl in return for substantial estates in Shropshire - principally Aston Boterell where you can see a family tomb. The early Boterels divided their time between the two counties as lords of both estates. The Botterell family can be found as late as 1735.
